Coyote Ridge: A Great Family Hike Close to Home

If you call Colorado home, or if you're just passing through, odds are you've noticed the beauty of this state. Around here, we're pretty lucky to have trails (like Coyote Ridge) that will take you through thick forests, by the side of twinkling lakes, and up some steep grades that bring incredible views. These spots are more than just great camera shots—they're places where families come together, make memories, and go on little adventures that mean a big deal.

The great thing about our trails? They've got something for everyone. No matter if your boots have seen a few seasons or you're just breaking them in, these paths are made for walking, running, and pausing to take it in. And if you've got kids, there's nothing like watching them experience the mountains for the first time. I'll talk about several trails as time goes on, but I thought today I would talk about one that is close to home and particularly good for families: Coyote Ridge. So lace up, grab some snacks, and let's hit the trails of Northern Colorado!

Why Coyote Ridge is Ideal for Families

Let's talk more about Coyote Ridge—this trail is great for families looking to soak up Colorado's great outdoors without the fuss. Here’s why I think Coyote Ridge is a winner:

  • First, the distance. The whole trail is about 4 miles out and back. It’s just the right length to make you feel like you’ve had a decent hike without tiring out the little ones too much. It gets a bit steep toward the end (about a 600 foot elevation gain), but you don’t have to tackle that part if you don’t want to. If the kids have had enough, just turn it around and head back. Easy.

  • Proximity to town. Coyote Ridge sits between Fort Collins and Loveland off of Taft Hill Road. It doesn't require a long drive up the mountains.

  • Who doesn’t love a good prairie dog sighting? At the start of the trail, there’s a whole town of these little critters. Kids go nuts for it, and let’s be honest, it’s pretty entertaining watching them pop in and out of their burrows. You can tell this prairie dog town is particularly well-fed (but I wouldn't recommend feeding them!).

  • Amenities—because let's face it, with kids, you need 'em. There are restrooms just past the prairie dog town. Plus, when you need a moment to catch your breath or just want to soak in the views, there are benches placed just where you need them. Perfect for those snack breaks or just a quick rest.

  • Education? Coyote Ridge has got you covered. This trail is sprinkled with educational plaques that’ll teach you about the local flora and fauna. It's like a classroom in the wild, and you’ll all come away a bit wiser about the world around you.

  • And lastly: the "Hidden Clues Trail." It’s a quarter-mile loop that breaks off from the main path, and it’s smooth sailing for strollers and wheelchairs. This part of the trail is all about discovery, with signs that give you the scoop on the wildlife in the area. It’s a hit for the tiny explorers and anyone who'd appreciate an easier route.

What to Expect on the Trail

  • As you set out for Coyote Ridge, remember it's all about the open skies and prairie views—there's hardly any shade. This trail gives you a front-row seat to those expansive foothills, so a generous application of sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat are your best buddies. If the sun gets too intense, there's a cabin near the restrooms with a covered porch. It's a great place to cool off and eat a snack. The cabin is also where the Hidden Clues Trail starts.

  • Just a heads up: the trail isn’t paved. Be sure to wear good walking shoes to navigate the path comfortably. I wear flipflops everywhere, but I would leave them in the car for this hike.

  • Keep in mind, Coyote Ridge is a no-go for dogs. But for those who want to trot along on horseback or cycle through, you're in luck—both are welcome on this trail. It's a shared space that offers a bit of everything for everyone.

  • A word of caution—rattlesnakes have been known to hang around in this area. It's a rare sight, but it's wise to remind the little ones (and let's be honest, the big ones too) to give snakes their space. Admire them from a distance if you spot one.

  • Lastly, make sure to bring enough water for you and your little ones. While there is a well-head on site, the water isn't for drinking. Staying hydrated is key, especially under that Colorado sun.

Coyote Ridge promises a genuine outdoor experience—just come prepared and you'll be all set for a memorable family hike.

Other Preparation Tips

Timing is important if you're planning to hike Coyote Ridge in the summer. Since the trail offers little shade, setting out in the early morning or late evening can make your hike more pleasant. Just keep in mind, as the sun dips below the horizon, it gets pitch black out there. So if you're planning an evening hike, make sure to head back before dusk settles in, or bring a flashlight to light your way back to the car. This hike is also nice in the fall and in the spring (as long as there is no mud!). During those seasons, the heat isn't nearly as big of a consideration.

Speaking of cars, the parking lot can fill up fast, especially on those bright, sunny days when everyone wants a slice of the great outdoors. And remember, parking along Taft Hill is a no-go, so it's best to arrive early or have a backup plan.

Now, about bugs. They love the trail as much as we do. I'm not one for bug spray—something about the smell (and the DEET) doesn't work for me. But if buzzing critters aren’t your thing, you might want to pack some repellent. It could be the difference between a hike and a swat-a-thon.

If you enjoy bird watching, you might want to bring along a pair of binoculars. The Fort Collins Audubon Society actually put together an impressive list of birds you can spot on the trail. You can find it here.  There's a ton of other wildlife to see, too, and bringing the binoculars can bring it all closer for your curious kids!
